General Hospital Outrages Trina Fans — and, at the Same Time, Gives Them Hope: Here’s How

This week, the city of Port Charles will gather to mourn Spencer Cassadine. Of course, General Hospital fans know that the handsome young prince isn’t actually dead, but the show must go on… even while his portrayer, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, is off filming Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. Trina, meanwhile, does not know that her true love is out there somewhere, leaving her rocked and devastated.

 

 

Many viewers, meanwhile, are equally upset, but for a whole different reason. In the days leading up to Spencer’s memorial service, the soap released its latest promo, which can be seen below.

 

 

“How are we expected to say good-bye to Spencer?” asks Alexis, who is seen kneeling at his grave, surrounded by many of the town’s most prominent citizens, including Kevin, Laura, Finn, Gregory and a back-for-the-occasion Cameron. The rest of the promo focuses on the investigation into the local crime wave. While the ad is titled “Everyone Is Guilty,” a whole lot of folks took to social media to say that the show was guilty… of not making Trina the center of a promo regarding her beau’s death.

“This promo is for sure a choice,” said Jess on Twitter. “Trina should be the main focal point, yet we have Alexis (who didn’t even show up to his goodbye party). Half of these people didn’t even look at Spencer when he was in Port Charles.”

 

She joined many others who used the hashtag #TrinasVoiceMatters to express their displeasure about the ad. In fact, so many Twitter users used the hashtag that for several hours, #TrinasVoiceMatters was listed as a trending topic. Meanwhile, followers of Spencer and Trina — dubbed #SprinaNation — shared their thoughts via a message reading, in part, “Trina’s voice matters. Black female voices matter. Black stories matter.”

It goes on to say, “Despite Spencer’s temporary storyline departure from General Hospital, Sprina’s love story is far from over. Most importantly, Trina’s next chapter is just beginning.”

 

Some, however, see hope on the horizon in the form of incoming headwriters Elizabeth Korte and Patrick Mulcahey. The latter’s work in particular has been spotlighted, with attention being paid to the strong material he wrote for The Bold and the Beautiful‘s Maya, a Black character who would later share that she was transgender.

“One thing I definitely expect,” tweeted Semaj of Mulcahey, “is better writing for Trina’s character individually on the show.” She went on to point that during his tenure on the CBS sudser, he had given “the character Maya her own voice.”

 

This same sentiment was echoed by several others who’d been fans of his work in general and on Maya’s storyline in particular. Look for the new writing team’s material to begin airing sometime in March.
